There is no perfect number, but 15–20 interviews with your target customer segment is a strong starting point. The signal you are looking for is pattern repetition — when you stop hearing new problems and start hearing the same pain points described the same way, you have enough to move forward. Never fewer than 10.

You can absolutely solo-found. Many successful Indian startups began as solo ventures. However, most institutional investors in India — particularly at the pre-seed and seed stage — strongly prefer teams of 2–3 founders. The workload of building, selling, and fundraising simultaneously is also significantly more manageable with a co-founder.

A smoke test is a low-cost experiment to measure real demand before you build anything. The simplest version: build a landing page describing your product and its pricing, drive a small amount of traffic to it, and measure sign-ups or “Buy Now” clicks. If people are willing to commit their email or even payment details before the product exists, that is strong validation. Tools like Carrd, Webflow, or even a WhatsApp form work perfectly for this.
